On the evening of Saturday, June 8, with bagpipe music in the air, 150 faculty, staff, board members, friends and family gathered at the Nicholas Student Center for a cèilidh to celebrate Dr. Marshall W. Smith’s retirement.

A cèilidh is a Gaelic celebration with stories and tales, poems and ballads, music and food, and the evening included all of those elements.

Smith family friends Marsha Summers (soprano) and Suzanne Riehl (keyboard) performed songs by Robert Burns.  Faculty members Kerrigan Sullivan and Sandy Via read poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Burns, Carol Ann Duffy and Helena Nelson.

Delegate Riley Ingram presented Dr. Smith with a resolution created in his honor.  Executive Director of the John Tyler Community College Foundation, Beverley Dew, and members of the Foundation Board announced that through generous donations from the community; the College family; and Dr. Smith’s colleagues, family and friends, the Dr. Marshall W. Smith Endowed Scholarship has been established.

Dew and Foundation Board members also presented Dr. Smith with a large, framed drawing of Dr. Smith created by Professor of Art Colin Ferguson.  The drawing is a study for a painting of Dr. Smith that will be hung on campus.

Personal notes that were collected through the cèilidh invitation were given to Dr. Smith that evening in a handsome antique mahogany box with the College seal on it made by Mike Mathieu of Woodworking Plus.

Three videos were also shown during the evening.  The first featured many of Dr. Smith’s former and current colleagues and employees telling funny stories about working with Dr. Smith.  The second video detailed Dr. Smith’s many accomplishments during his career, notably the quarter system conversion, the establishment of dual enrollment, and the creation of the Midlothian Campus.  The last video was a chance for many to let Dr. Smith know just what he has meant to them in their careers and personal lives.

After Dr. Smith’s son, Matt, gave a final toast, the group closed the cèilidh in the traditional manner by joining hands and singing Auld Lang Syne

More photos of the event are available on the College’s Flickr site.

More informaiton on Dr. Smith's retirement announcement and more than 22 years of service to John Tyler is also available, and donations to the scholarship can be made at www.jtcc.edu/giving.

The road to becoming an engineer is challenging. You have to be determined. You have to be focused. You have to build a strong educational foundation. And, as technology advances, you have to be ready to learn new things. Two brothers, Steven Easter and Jonathan Turman, decided to embrace those challenges together. They enrolled in John Tyler Community College’s Engineering program when it was brand new and became members of the program’s first graduating class. After completing their associate degrees in 2011, Easter and Turman used guaranteed admissions agreements to transfer to the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. Both brothers excelled, and this spring, they completed their bachelor’s degrees. In addition, Easter received a very big honor; he was named the top academic graduate of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

During their time at U.Va., the brothers garnered lots of attention for building a fully functional plane using cutting-edge 3D printing technology. The two spent countless hours working on their unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, as part of an internship with MITRE Corporation – an organization that manages federally funded research. There were twists, turns and failures along the way, but when the time came to fly their creation in front of representatives from MITRE Corporation, Easter and Turman enjoyed success and praise. That success led to media attention, an extension of their internships, and a new project – a second UAV.

In between classes, the two got back to work, refining their design. They also began writing a paper about their work, which they hope will be published. Their second UAV was completed just days ago and will now undergo testing with MITRE. The brothers say the workload has been intense but rewarding, and it has given them a real-world engineering experience that goes beyond textbooks. Both will now enjoy a little bit of rest, but it won’t last for long. Turman is currently interviewing for jobs, and Easter is preparing to start grad school at U.Va. in the fall.

Congratulations to these amazing JTCC Engineering alum!

John Tyler Community College is a two-year, public institution of higher education and is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler offers quality and economical opportunities for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, train for the workforce, or switch careers. The College, which served more than 14,895 students during the 2011-12 academic year, offers 17 associate degrees, seven certificates, and 34 career studies certificates. The institution also serves 15,000 non-credit students and more than 1,200 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The College also is committed to sustainability. In July 2010, it received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for Hamel Hall on its Midlothian Campus, becoming the first in the Virginia Community College System to receive such recognition. John Tyler Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The innovative partnership forged between Rolls-Royce Crosspointe and John Tyler Community College received statewide recognition during the annual Creating Excellence Awards Program ceremony held in June. The program, which highlights outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) and partnerships, is a collaboration of the Virginia Department of Education, The Virginia Career Education Foundation and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

During the ceremony, Rolls-Royce Crosspointe was honored with a VCCS Postsecondary CTE State Award in the category of Business and Industry Partnerships. The company was nominated for the award by John Tyler Community College.

The JTCC-Rolls-Royce partnership began before Rolls-Royce began constructing its first facility in Prince George County. The goal of the pairing was to build a pipeline of skilled employees for advance manufacturing careers. In the time since the partnership began, Rolls-Royce has provided invaluable input into the development and refinement of coursework and curricula; provided new machines, tools and resources for hands-on training at JTCC; joined JTCC’s Precision Machining Advisory Committee; and joined JTCC’s Foundation Board.

Students Shine Light on Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day

A chance to connect, share, learn and hopefully, influence change. That’s what three students from John Tyler Community College’s Great Expectations program say they experienced after being selected to participate in Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day. The three – Christine Malone, Silvia Garcia Murcia, and Thomas Wise – were among 40 foster youth from across the country chosen to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the event. Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day gives foster youth an opportunity to learn from each other; to discover how government works – especially in relation to the child welfare system; to shadow a member of Congress; to share their personal stories; and to discuss ways to improve policies that impact children and youths.

Christine Malone has been in the foster care system for 12 years, and during that time, she has lived in multiple homes and has been separated from her siblings. Since beginning classes at John Tyler Community College, Christine has been focused on her education. She wants to become an elementary school teacher and is working on her General Studies, Teacher Education Specialization Elementary (K-6) degree. While in Washington, Christine had the opportunity to shadow Congressman Bobby Scott of Virginia. She said her time with the congressman was amazing, and that she was inspired by all he has accomplished and is currently doing. Christine said meeting foster youth from across the nation also was inspirational because it made her realize that all of them, together, are really trying to change outcomes.

Silvia Garcia Murcia was born in Honduras and brought to the United States when she was 15-years old. When her father was deported, she was left alone and eventually entered Virginia’s foster care system. She is currently in JTCC’s Allied Health, Pre-Nursing program with plans to continue on into the College’s Nursing program. Her ultimate goal is to one day become a physician. In D.C., Silvia shadowed Rep. Al Green of Texas. Silvia says she shared her story with the congressman and helped him translate thank you notes into Spanish. She says she learned many valuable lessons from Rep. Green, including his belief that dreams can become a reality. Silvia says she also liked the congressman’s view on the importance of appreciating life. When asked how he was doing, Silvia said Rep. Green always responded with, “Better than I deserve.” Like Christine, Silvia says she was amazed to see so many people come together in an effort to bring change to the foster care system.

Thomas Wise spent 12 years in the Virginia foster care system. The first two years, he was placed in 10 different foster homes. Eventually, he found stability, and for the last seven years, he’s remained in one foster home. Despite all the challenges he faced, Thomas refused to become part of a negative statistic. He knows that far too often foster youth never finish high school and even fewer graduate from college. This May, Thomas beat those odds by becoming the first student in JTCC’s Great Expectations program to graduate. Thomas earned a transfer degree in Business Administration and just recently learned that he’s been accepted to Virginia Commonwealth University. During his trip to Washington, Tomas was paired up with Congressman André Carson from Indiana. Because Rep. Carson had to attend close-door sessions about Benghazi, Thomas only had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with him. However, Thomas said he was able to attend some congressional meetings, thanks to Rep. Carson’s assistants. Thomas said the experience was rewarding, that he really enjoyed meeting people who understood each other’s experiences. He also learned that his story can make a big impact on those who have never experienced the foster care system.

JTCC Engineering Alumni Celebrate Success

CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – The road to becoming an engineer is challenging. You have to be determined and focused, and you have to have a strong educational foundation. That foundation can be built in many ways, but having a clear-cut path that outlines specific course requirements, while paving the way for continued education can help students stay on track, save time, and even more importantly, save money. That’s what brothers Steven Easter and Jonathan Turman discovered when they decided to enroll in what was then John Tyler Community College’s new Engineering program. They became members of the program’s first graduating class and then used a guaranteed transfer agreement to continue their education at the University of Virginia’s (U.Va.) School of Engineering and Applied Science. This spring, the brothers completed their bachelor’s degrees, and Easter received a very big honor. He was named the top academic graduate of U.Va.’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Turman was finishing high school when he learned about Tyler’s Engineering program. The program, launched during the Fall 2009 semester, was designed in consultation with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at U.Va. to meet the transfer requirements of several four-year colleges and universities, some of which, like U.Va. and Virginia Tech, have guaranteed admissions agreements with John Tyler. Turman was immediately interested, so he talked to his brother about enrolling in the program. Easter, who was working in information technology at the time, had been thinking about making a career change, but he was unsure if college would be a good fit for him. With some encouragement from his wife, he decided to take the leap, and he joined his brother at Tyler.

John Tyler Community College proved to be a great fit for Easter and Turman. While at the College, they received scholarships, were inducted into the Beta Omicron Omicron Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and were named to the honors and dean’s lists. In 2011, they celebrated their graduation from Tyler and the completion of their associate degrees in engineering. Using the guaranteed admissions agreement between John Tyler Community College and the University of Virginia, the two transferred to U.Va.’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and moved to Charlottesville.

Easter says when he first arrived at U.Va., he was worried that he and his brother might be at a disadvantage because they came from a community college. That concern was quickly proven to be unfounded. “I actually felt like we were as well prepared as the other students who we were working beside, and our grades showed that we had the stuff to make it,” said Easter. Turman agreed, saying “We were top of our class the first semester. The transition was very easy. We were very well prepared.”

During their time at U.Va., the two excelled in and out of the classroom. They also garnered lots of attention after building a fully functional plane using cutting-edge 3D printing technology. Their achievement led to media attention, an extension of their internships, and a new project – a second UAV.

In between classes, the two got back to work, refining their design. They also began writing a paper about their work, which they hope will be published. Their second UAV was completed in late spring and will undergo testing with MITRE. The brothers say the workload was intense but rewarding, and it has given them a real-world engineering experience that goes beyond textbooks.

Around the time they finished their second UAV, the two celebrated the completion of their bachelor’s degrees. Easter decided to continue his education and will be starting graduate school at U.Va. this fall, while Turman is excitedly making plans to enter the workforce.

Turman and Easter are just two examples of John Tyler Community College alumni who have found success by using guaranteed admissions agreements. These agreements give John Tyler students who graduate with an associate degree and who meet GPA and other criteria the opportunity to seamlessly transfer to more than 25 four-year colleges and universities where they can continue their work toward a bachelor’s degree. The agreements also give students the opportunity to save money while taking their core general education classes. That’s because pursuing a degree at John Tyler Community College costs just over one-third the tuition and fees of a Virginia four-year public institution.

Learn more about John Tyler Community College’s guaranteed transfer agreements by visiting www.jtcc.edu/transfer, and explore Tyler’s programs of study, including its transfer degrees, at www.jtcc.edu/academics.

Those interested in getting started at Tyler still have time to enroll for the Fall 2013 semester. For an admissions application, go to www.jtcc.edu, click on “Apply Now.” Step-by-step information about admission also may be found at www.jtcc.edu/admissions/steps-for-admission/. Brandi Byrd’s life took an unexpected turn in 2010. After working for 13 years as a certified pharmacy technician, she found herself unemployed when the company she worked for closed. Byrd weighed her options. She considered trying to find another job in her field, but the economic downturn left her few opportunities. She also knew that even if she got a job, there would be little-to-no room for career advancement. That’s when she began exploring education options.

Byrd knew she wanted a career that would allow her to help people, and she was interested in radiology, so looked into a program at a local hospital. The program required some prerequisite classes, so she turned to John Tyler Community College. She signed up for classes and began pursuing her new dream. Byrd said, at first, she only intended to take a few classes at Tyler, but with the encouragement of one of her instructors, she decided to alter her path and begin work on a two-year General Studies degree.

In her second semester, she made an invaluable discovery; she learned about JTCC’s On-Ramp program, which helps dislocated workers by providing financial support; career planning assistance; academic and employment resources; and much more. Byrd spoke to the On-Ramp coordinator, LaWanda Woods, applied to the program, and was accepted. Through On-Ramp, Byrd learned about career planning offered through the Virginia Education Wizard; got the opportunity to attend workshops designed to help people prepare for job searches, and received financial assistance for tuition and textbooks. The financial help was extremely important to her – especially since she is a single mother and a caregiver to her own mother. “It helped me get through my courses faster,” said Byrd. “Without that help, it would have taken me longer to complete my degree.” Also helpful: the support she received from the program’s coordinator. “Ms. Woods always was there when I needed her,” said Byrd.

While at Tyler, Byrd has kept her focus on school. “The last three years have been busy and chaotic,” Byrd reflected. “I’ve given up going out with friends, and I’ve missed family functions. That’s been hard, but I think in the long run, it will be worth it.” Byrd’s experience also has made her realize something very important. “It’s shown me that I can do more than I thought I could do. The challenge has given me confidence in myself.”

Byrd is now celebrating the benefits of that hard work. This summer, she completed her degree, and now she’s preparing to move on to the next part of her academic journey. She’s been accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University’s nuclear medicine program and will start this fall.

We’re always happy when our alumni let us know what they’ve been doing. We’re even more thrilled when they are willing to share their success stories. That’s just what Shawn Fenner did recently, when he agreed to be featured in video that’s now part of the Virginia Community College System’s (VCCS) new web site.

Shawn came to Tyler as a career switcher. After working more than ten years in journalism, he had decided he wanted to move into a career that would allow him to help others. In 2012, he accomplished that goal by graduating from Tyler’s Nursing program and getting a job at a local hospital. But, Shawn hasn’t stopped there. While he’s working in his field, he’s also continuing his education.

Shawn's story caught the attention of the VCCS, which wanted to highlight the role community colleges play in helping people further or switch their careers. Shawn’s video is now part of the VCCS homepage. You can enjoy it at www.vccs.edu or on YouTube at http://youtu.be/2cB7FAa0Cos.

CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – A record 125 students received assistance with their 2013-2014 college education expenses thanks to scholarships recently awarded by the John Tyler Community College Foundation, Inc. In addition to awarding more total scholarships than ever before, the Foundation also awarded a record-breaking amount of scholarship money, $192,245. Students received scholarships based on academic performance, programs of study and financial need. At Scholarship Celebration Night, held August 15, 2013, the recipients had the opportunity to share their stories and to thank the donors who generously support the Foundation’s scholarship program.

Rob Ukrop, from the Richmond Kickers, spoke to attendees and offered them inspirational advice with his message, “Go Make a Difference.” Mike White, John Tyler Community College Foundation president and president of Virginia Asset Management, and Dr. Edward “Ted” Raspiller, president of John Tyler Community College, also addressed the crowd.

“Scholarships are life-changing for many of our students, so it is heartwarming to see donors, scholarship recipients, and their families meet for the first time,” said Beverley Dew, executive director of the JTCC Foundation. “Donors are able to see and hear ‘firsthand’ just how important their scholarship is to these students, and scholarship recipients are able to look their donors in the eye and tell them just how much they appreciate their investment.” Dew also asked for continued community help in spreading the word about making a John Tyler scholarship investment. In addition, she thanked the generous sponsors who supported Scholarship Celebration Night: Virginia Asset Management; National Student Clearinghouse; Atlantic Constructors; Village Bank; DuPont; Nationwide-Heinz Insurance and Financial Services; Comcast Spotlight; Amsted Rail; Church & Dwight Co., Inc.; Elmcroft of Chesterfield; and Dr. and Mrs. Marshall W. The John Tyler Community College Foundation relies on the generosity of the community to continue its work in securing the future of the College, its students, its faculty and its staff.  Since most of the College’s graduates live and work in the area, gifts to the Foundation are an investment in the future of the community.  Through donations, grants and endowments, the Foundation is able to provide scholarships for students, to fund academic programs and capital projects, to renovate and modernize classrooms and labs, and to encourage the professional development of John Tyler Community College’s faculty and staff.  This work ensures the College continues its pledge of providing academic excellence while expanding the services it offers to fulfill escalating workforce requirements.

The College, which served more than 14,000 students during the 2012-13 academic year, offers 17 associate degrees, seven certificates, and 34 career studies certificates.
