CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – On May 11, 2018, family, friends and members of the community will come together to honor John Tyler Community College’s newest graduates during the college’s fiftieth annual Commencement Ceremony. The Class of 2018 includes more than 1,100 graduates, and for each, the road to commencement is a personal journey filled with a variety of goals and hopes for the future. Those attending this year’s ceremony will hear from four members of the graduating class: Julia Bailey, Janay Cameron, Warren Reid and Lauren Sanford. The four will share insights into their time at Tyler, as well as offer words of inspiration to their classmates.

The community is invited to join in the festivities. For those who would like to watch the ceremony but are unable to attend, a live video stream will be provided. “I have enjoyed being a part of the community, getting to know other students in many different walks of life and being able to have this educational journey with professors who took pride in seeing me succeed academically and in the community.” – Dana Legere

When she was in high school, Dana Legere, of Midlothian, was unsure what her future would hold. She had many interests but none that inspired her to pursue a career in a particular field. Her mother, an employee of John Tyler Community College, suggested Dana enroll at the college and explore. Dana agreed to research the college, and when she did, she said she saw opportunity – the opportunity to find herself.

She enrolled in the General Studies, Psychology Specialization program, began taking classes, and immersed herself in college life. It was then that Dana experienced an “aha” moment. It happened when she took a medical terminology class, an elective for her degree. Dana loved the class. She realized she wanted to learn more and to help people who were ill. It was at that point that she discovered she wanted to pursue a career in medicine, becoming a doctor or physician’s assistant. So, she changed her degree to General Studies and began planning the next steps in her educational journey.

Next up for Dana – James Madison University. Dana plans to study health sciences and medicine on her way to medical school.

Graduate Spotlight: Brittney White

“JTCC taught me that I can accomplish big things with effort, support and vision. I never imagined that I would get a degree or accomplish anything this grand. I am so happy with how my life has changed for the better and that I have a direction and set goals. I have more years of school left, but John Tyler taught me that I have what it takes.” – Brittney White

For 14 years, Brittney White, of North Chesterfield, worked in advocacy at a local hospital. While she enjoyed having a job that helped people, she realized she was ready for a new challenge and a new career focus. She wanted to give back and to work in a field filled with compassion, caring for those most in need.

With an interest in social work, Brittney decided to enroll in John Tyler Community College, becoming the third person in her family to become a Tyler Trailblazer. Brittney says her family’s experience at Tyler plus the college’s reputation and its program and transfer agreement variety inspired her to choose Tyler and its Human Services, Pre-Social Work program.

She admits she was a bit nervous when she first started classes. As an older student and career switcher, Brittney said she wasn’t sure what to expect. What she discovered was a diverse student body, a welcoming environment and a strong support system that helped her grow her confidence. The experience also prompted her to refine her career path, refocusing her goals on pre-radiation science and working with cancer or hospice patients.

Next up for Brittney – Virginia Commonwealth University. Brittney has been accepted into the university’s pre-radiation science program and will be transferring the credits earned for her Tyler degree to her new bachelor’s degree path.

“The support I have received from everyone I have met through my experience at Tyler is incredible. The connections and sense of belonging I have developed through the students, faculty, staff, and my student clubs and organizations at Tyler have created a foundation that I know will be of great value in my personal and work life for years to come.” – Julia Bailey

As she considered her career goals, Julia Bailey knew she wanted to work with people. She also knew the fields that held her interest would require at least a bachelor’s degree. So, she explored her options and landed on John Tyler Community College. Julia said the college’s reputation; its guaranteed transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities; its location; and its lower tuition factored into her decision.

She entered Tyler’s Liberal Arts programs, became heavily involved in student life, and soon found her goals coming into focus. She decided she wanted to become an attorney and to focus on family law. So, as she continued to pursue her associate degree, she began taking classes for Tyler’s Paralegal Studies career studies certificate. Julia says that will give her the option of working in the field while she continues her education. “I love how the possibilities at Tyler are endless,” she said. “My time at Tyler has helped me in discovering what career I wish to go into and gave me the confidence to work hard toward achieving my goals.” Another big bonus for Julia – the cost. “To be able to complete my first two years of college with an Associates in Liberal Arts and a Certificate in Paralegal Studies without any student debt is an amazing feeling.”

Next up for Julia – University of Virginia. Julia says she will continue honing her communications skills by earning a bachelor’s degree in English before heading to law school.

“John Tyler humbled me! Like many other students, it had been some time since I was in school full time. So, getting back into the swing of things was a struggle, but the teachers supported us all the way.” – Warren Reid.

Warren Reid was determined to chart his own course, and that did not involve the family business. Warren grew up in Farmville, and from a very early age, he remembers playing in and learning about the funeral homes operated by his grandfather, his grandmother and then is mother. When the time came to make a career choice, he chose to go in a different direction – one that took him to Bowie State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management, and then went on to work various jobs in the Washington, D.C. area.

Warren, however, found himself pulled back to Farmville and to his family. And, in 2013, he decided the family legacy he had tried to avoid was actually his calling in life. So, he enrolled in John Tyler Community College’s Funeral Services program. Warren said the program’s proximity to his home, the cost, and its reputations were all factors in his decision. Plus, his grandmother and mother were both graduates of the program.

While at Tyler, Warren studied and made friends and juggled class schedules while working. He also saw his life grow and change. He got married, and he welcomed the birth of his daughter. He then celebrated his graduation from Tyler’s Funeral Services program in December 2017.

Next up for Warren – creating his own pathway as he continues his family’s legacy.

“I was looking for something to ignite a spark back into my life. John Tyler did exactly that! I was able to fall in love with learning and education all over again, but in a whole new way.” – Lauren Sanford

After graduating from Chesterfield’s Manchester High School at the age of 16, Lauren Sanford felt she was ready to move away from home and jump into college life. Her parents, however, encouraged a different route: go to John Tyler Community College first. Both had attended and graduated from Tyler, and they liked what the college offered.

Lauren admits she initially wasn’t excited about this option, but she chose to follow her parents’ advice. “I knew it was the smarter route to go, as you do so much maturing in the first two years of college,” says Lauren. “After I began classes at JTCC, I loved it!” Lauren enrolled in the General Studies program, immersed herself in campus life, and found a renewed interest in learning. “I was looking for something to ignite a spark back into my life,” she says. “John Tyler did exactly that! I was able to fall in love with learning and education all over again, but in a whole new way.”

As her education continued, Lauren began to focus on her career options. She became interested in learning more about her father’s insurance and financial services business, so she took on a job as a marketing communications manager.

Next up for Lauren – Virginia Commonwealth University. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial studies and eventually, a master’s degree. Her ultimate goal is to run her family’s business.

“Before I started at JTCC, I had no idea what I wanted to do and had very little confidence that I could start all over after spending so much time in the military. JTCC helped me discover my passion for helping others and gain the confidence I needed to move forward with a new career.” – Heather Ashbeck

A desire to make sure victims become empowered survivors drives Heather Ashbeck. Her goal: become a licensed social worker and a counselor for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. “I was a victim of domestic violence,” she says. “I want to be able to help others who have experienced or who are experiencing the same thing.”

After spending 18-years in the U.S. Air Force, Heather, a mother of three, said the idea of returning to school made her nervous. She decided to take classes at John Tyler Community College because she liked the college’s small class sizes, its variety of majors, and its transfer options. The Midlothian resident initially began in the Business Administration program, but thanks to a course in sociology, she discovered her true calling – Tyler’s degree in Human Services, Pre-Social Work Specialization. Soon after switching majors, Heather immersed herself in student life, becoming active in a number of clubs, an intern in the college’s Military and Veterans Education Office, and a worker in the Student Activities Office.

Next up for Heather? Virginia Commonwealth University. Once there, she plans to continue her education in social work.

“I gained a deep passion for learning and exploring life. I reinvented myself.” – Elena Brancato

Elena Brancato wants to be a role model for her son. She also wants to challenge herself and realize new successes in the workforce. Elena worked for a while as an office manager at a marketing firm but said the benefits did not allow her to create a sustainable and comfortable life for her and her child. So, she started looking at options. With the support of a workforce organization, Elena honed her resume writing and other skills and researched career advice given to her. One suggestion: go to John Tyler Community College and become a nurse.

With her interest piqued, Elena went to the college and was greeted with what she described as, “friendly faces and open arms.” She signed up and began taking classes. Elena said she was quickly impressed with Tyler’s faculty, who took time to teach students how to learn, not just how to memorize subject content. She also made another discovery: that she wanted to work in communications, not nursing. So, she switched majors and entered the General Studies, Mass Communications Specialization. She also got involved in student activities, joining clubs and the honor society and becoming a student ambassador. “I learned to gain confidence,” she said. “I gained valuable experiences through it all.” Elena is excited about the direction she’s moving in, because it will allow her to develop skills that can be utilized in a wide variety of workplace environments.

Next up for Elena – Virginia Commonwealth University. Elena plans to major in public relations and minor in media studies, and then, put her newly honed communications skills to work.

“I want to teach at the collegiate level specifically because of the teachers at John Tyler. The theatre professors here have made such an incredible impact on my life and my career that I hope to be as great as they are someday.” – Ben Millefolie

Ben Millefolie loves the stage. From acting and singing to writing and directing, he finds all aspects of the theatre to be exciting. “Theatre can inspire, make you sympathize, cry, educate, illuminate, and my favorite: laugh,” he says. “Theatre is both an escape from the problems of every day and a means to change and correct those problems.”

His passion for theatre emerged in middle school, when he first began acting in plays. He soon found himself “obsessed” with the creative magic that envelops the stage, and he went on to perform in high school shows and in the show choir, Capital Swing. After graduating from Chesterfield County’s Manchester High School in 2015, Ben decided to make John Tyler Community College the next step in his educational journey, and he enrolled in the General Studies, Theatre Arts Specialization program. Initially, Tyler was a practical choice because it was affordable and close to home. After a semester, however, Ben said he was endeared to the professors, who he said encouraged and inspired him.

Ben immersed himself in Tyler’s theatre program, honing his acting, writing and directing skills. Along the way, he also realigned his career goals to include teaching theatre. “I want to teach at the collegiate level specifically because of the teachers at John Tyler,” he says. “The theatre professors here have made such an incredible impact on my life and my career that I hope to be as great as they are someday.”

Next up for Ben – Longwood University. Ben’s goal is to earn a master’s in education and a masters in theatre.

“John Tyler helped me realize that with hard work, motivation, support, and contacts, my goals can be reached. I also found that many people are out there to help someone succeed. This school gave me hope for the future.” – Monica Dibley

When asked about her dream employer, Monica Dibley answers without hesitation, “NASA.” She firmly focused her attention on that goal as she pursued a General Studies, Science Specialization degree at John Tyler Community College.

Before enrolling in Tyler, Monica spent a couple of years, right after high school, working as a LPN. While she respected the work, she discovered it was not the right fit for her and decided to consider new options.

She chose Tyler so she could save money while exploring some of her other interests. She quickly found herself drawn to science and math, subjects that always interested her. She also discovered an exciting opportunity – the chance to apply for the Virginia Space Grant Consortium’s STEM Takes Flight NASA Research Experiences program. Monica was accepted into the 2017 summer program and spent several weeks as a guest student researcher at the NASA Langley Research Center.

Next up for Monica – the College of William and Mary or Christopher Newport University. She’s been accepted to both and is now weighing her options, as she makes plan to continue studying science. She hopes to eventually earn a doctorate and launch her dream career at NASA.

“John Tyler has had a number of impacts on me. I discovered a major that I’m passionate about; forged many strong friendships that I anticipate will last for a long time; participated in a number of exciting events and opportunities as a student ambassador; and created working relationships with professors that I felt respected me and encouraged me to put drive and effort into my studies.” – Reece Adkins

Technology intrigues Reece Adkins. Smartphones, computer processors and latest gadgets fascinate him. He wants to understand how they work, and more importantly, Reece wants to know how to program them. His curious and analytical nature stretch back as far as he can remember, but for a brief period of time, Reece toyed with the idea of pursuing a different career path. In high school, he did not care for math, so he decided to explore other options. He enrolled in John Tyler Community College’s General Studies program and began his search.

A year into the program, Reece received a loving nudge from his sister, who challenged him to pursue his longtime interest – programming. Reece decided to go for it, focusing his major on the Computer Science Specialization. Soon after, he made a surprising discovery: a love of math! Reece says instead of dreading the idea of taking math, he now contemplates which type of math he wants to learn next. He attributes this change to his time at Tyler. Reece says thanks to the college, he’s grown and become a different student. “The biggest impact JTCC has had on me was helping me discover a major that I was passionate about and laying out the path forward in front of me,” said Reece.

Next up for Reece – James Madison University. Reece plans to complete a bachelor’s of science in computer science with a minor in mathematics on his way to becoming a software developer.

John Tyler Community College Celebrates Chester Campus Renovation Project

CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Enhancing and expanding programs that prepare the workforce of today and tomorrow are at the core of a renovation project that’s about to kick off at John Tyler Community College’s Chester Campus. The college unveiled plans for the project during a ceremonial groundbreaking event on May 18, 2018. The project, scheduled to officially get underway this summer, involves two buildings – Bird Hall, one of the college’s original buildings, and the Nicholas Center.

Once completed, Bird Hall will house the college’s Nursing and EMS/Paramedic programs, allowing faculty and students to share state-of-the-art equipment and participate in collaborative experiences that will mirror real-world interactions. The renovated Bird Hall will also feature three new science labs. The Nicholas Center renovation includes an expansion that will nearly double the building’s current size. The 25,503 square foot addition will be a new workforce center operated by the Community College Workforce Alliance, the workforce development partnership between John Tyler Community College and Reynolds Community College. In addition to classroom spaces, the new workforce center will feature a large, flexible lab, which can be configured to meet the needs of a wide variety of training programs. The renovated Nicholas Center also will include a large conference room that can be used for workforce training and other activities; new collaborative spaces for Tyler students and the Office of Student Activities; a larger bookstore with a café; and additional general classroom and office space. The Chester Campus renovation project is expected to cost about $34 million and to take about 14 months to complete.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Edward “Ted” Raspiller, president of John Tyler Community College, stressed the importance of understanding the needs of the community and its people and employers when embarking on a project such as the one Tyler is about to launch. “At John Tyler Community College, we say all the time that community is our middle name,” said Dr. Raspiller. “I don’t think anything exemplifies that more than this project.”

Speakers at the ceremony also addressed the important role the Chester Campus project will play in connecting people with jobs. “There are many, many jobs out there that are going unfilled,” said Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System. “The number of people who want those jobs is at an all-time high, but they can’t get them because they don’t have the right training. John Tyler is going to change all that.”

Danielle Fitz-Hugh, president and CEO of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, reiterated the need for skilled workers, especially in the healthcare industry. “Our region has the largest number of employers and access to healthcare, and we need workers to fill those jobs,” said Fitz-Hugh.

Chief Workforce Advisor to the Governor Megan Healy spoke about the important role colleges like Tyler play in supporting the needs of workers and employers. “Every day, I think about the people who need jobs and about the jobs that need people,” said Dr. Healy. “My job is to build a bridge that connects them, and I know the concrete of that bridge is the community college system. I’m really excited to see the great work of John Tyler, but I’m even more excited to see the great workers that John Tyler produces.”

The Honorable Kirkland Cox, Speaker of Virginia’s House of Delegates, addressed the life-changing impact workforce development opportunities can have. “If you look at the jobs and careers this project will foster and the enhanced pay, there is so much at work here,” said Speaker Cox. “If you can create these kinds of opportunities for people, it goes beyond just a job.”

Following the remarks given by the guest speakers, Dr. Raspiller announced the college’s new workforce center will be named the William H. Talley, III Center for Workforce Development. William H. Talley, III, of Petersburg, is a long-time advocate of John Tyler Community College and Virginia’s community colleges. For nearly 30 years, he has supported the college in a number of ways, serving on the John Tyler Community College Foundation Board and on Tyler’s local College Board, as well as establishing the William H. Talley, III Endowed Scholarship. He also served on the State Board for Community Colleges. He received John Tyler Community College’s Homer C. Eliades Legacy Award in 2004, the Virginia Community College System’s Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy in 2006, and an honorary degree from Tyler in 2015. After the naming announcement, Talley thanked those in attendance and spoke of his love of John Tyler Community College and Virginia’s community college system.

John Tyler Community College offers more than 60 majors that provide pathways to careers in high-demand fields; transfer opportunities to four-year colleges and universities; and industry credentials and licensures. The college, with campuses in Chester and Midlothian, a Nursing Education Center, online classes, and off-campus classrooms, served more than 13,900 students during the 2016-17 academic year. Pinning dates back to the 1880s. The pin, given to graduate candidates, symbolizes the school of nursing where the students earned their clinical experience, achieved academic credentials and began their socialization into the profession. The ceremony marks the completion of that rigorous training and is often viewed with the same importance as commencement.

John Tyler Community College offers more than 60 majors that provide pathways to careers in high-demand fields; transfer opportunities to four-year colleges and universities; and industry credentials and licensures. Next Up: An Exciting Renovation Project at Tyler’s Chester Campus

Next up: Exciting changes are on the way for Tyler’s Chester Campus! Starting this summer, two campus buildings, the Nicholas Center and Bird Hall, will temporarily close in order to undergo extensive renovations. These renovations, which are expected to take about 14 months to complete, will allow Tyler to enhance and expand programs that prepare students for in-demand jobs.

Bird Hall, one of the college’s original buildings, first opened its doors in 1967. When it reopens to students in Fall 2019, the inside of Bird Hall will feature a new layout. A portion of the building will be dedicated to Health Sciences and will house the college’s Nursing and EMS/Paramedic programs, allowing faculty and students to share state-of-the-art equipment and participate in collaborative experiences that will mirror real-world interactions. The renovated Bird Hall will also feature new science labs.

The Nicholas Center renovation includes an expansion that will nearly double the building’s current size. The 25,503 square foot addition will be a new workforce, which will be operated by the Community College Workforce Alliance, the workforce development partnership between John Tyler Community College and Reynolds Community College. In addition to classroom spaces, the new workforce center, which will be called the William H. Talley, III Center for Workforce Development, will feature a large, flexible lab that can be configured to meet the needs of a wide variety of training programs. The renovated Nicholas Center also will include a large conference room that can be used for workforce training and other activities; new collaborative spaces for Tyler students and the Office of Student Activities; a larger bookstore with a café; and additional general classroom and office space.

To prepare for this project, college offices and services in Bird Hall and the Nicholas Center are being relocated to other spaces around the Chester Campus. The online employee directory and department web pages will be updated once moves are completed.

Keep an eye on your e-mail, on the news section of the web site, and on Tyler’s social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn) for updates about office moves; dates when Bird and Nicholas will close to the public; and ongoing information about this construction project.

Theresa Windham Service Award

This award was first presented in 1996 in honor of Theresa Hands Windham, who succumbed to a sudden illness in 1993 at the age of 37 while serving as the college’s coordinator of grants and development.  During her short tenure at Tyler, Ms. Windham’s kindness and selflessness touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff.  Always smiling, always striving to help others, she was loved by all who had the good fortune to make her acquaintance. This award recognizes students who personify Ms. Windham’s dedication to service without regard for personal gain or adulation. This year’s recipient was Heather Ashbeck (23112). Ashbeck served in the U.S. Air Force for 18 years and is a mother of three children. When she decided to return to school, she chose John Tyler Community College because she liked the college’s small class sizes, its variety of majors, and its transfer options. While taking courses, she discovered her true calling: to become a licensed social worker who helps victims of domestic violence and sexual assault become empowered survivors. Ashbeck switched majors, enrolling in Tyler’s Human Services, Pre-Social Work degree program, and she immersed herself in student life, becoming active in a number of clubs, an intern in the college’s Military and Veterans Education Office, and a worker in the Student Activities Office.

Daniel Dalton Award

The Daniel Dalton Award, named in honor of a John Tyler Community College founding faculty member, is presented annually to an outstanding club or student organization that exhibits excellence in the areas of service to the College, commitment to community service, and dedication to academics. This year’s award was presented to the Student Veteran Organization (SVO). Throughout the past year, SVO has donated gift bags to over 70 veterans at McGuire Hospital; hosted a variety of events commemorating the service and sacrifice of those who serve in uniform and out; honored veterans by lining flags along the entrances of both campuses; organized fundraisers; and supported the “UnDecorate a Tree” campaign to assist Tyler students whose families were in need during the holiday season.

Marshall Denison Society

The Marshall Denison Society, named for the College’s second president, was established to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the student activities program at John Tyler. Dr. John Kirn, professor of history, was this year’s inductee.
