CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – When it comes to going to college, money matters. The cost of tuition can be a barrier that prevents some from starting or completing a higher education credential. The John Tyler Community College Foundation can help. The Foundation runs a scholarship program that provides funding to returning and new John Tyler students. During the current academic year, the Foundation awarded 178 students $300,525 in scholarships. For many students, having their tuition and textbooks paid for through a scholarship allows them to focus on their education. “This scholarship means my second school year in a row with no student loans,” writes Ashley Snider, a Business Administration major and resident of Chesterfield County. “This is a huge burden lifted.”

Applications are currently being accepted for John Tyler Community College Foundation scholarships covering the 2016-2017 academic year. To be considered for a Foundation scholarship, returning and new Tyler students must:
•    Complete the JTCC Foundation Scholarship Application for the 2016-17 academic year. A link to this online application may be found at www.jtcc.edu/scholarships. Only one scholarship application needs to be submitted to be considered for all Foundation scholarships.
•    Have in-state tuition status.
•    Have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.
•    Be enrolled or be planning to enroll in a certificate and/or degree program at John Tyler for the 2016-17 academic year. Students must be officially enrolled in a major before scholarship funds will be disbursed (posted to their account).
•    Have a completed 2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at John Tyler before the scholarship deadline. For more information and for the FAFSA application, go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Note: When filling out the FAFSA application, enter JTCC’s school code of 004004.

Those interested in being considered for a JTCC International Studies Scholarship for summer study abroad, must submit their applications by March 15. For all other Tyler Foundation scholarships, the application deadline is April 15.

Additional information about the John Tyler Community College Foundation’s scholarship program may be found at www.jtcc.edu/scholarships. Questions about the program or the scholarship process may be directed to the Foundation Office at foundation@jtcc.edu or 804-594-1476.

The Foundation provides scholarships for students; funds academic programs, capital projects, and renovations to modernize classrooms and labs; and encourages the professional development of John Tyler Community College’s faculty and staff. This work ensures the College continues its pledge of providing academic excellence to students while expanding the services it offers to meet the community’s workforce requirements. Since most of the College’s graduates live and work in the area, gifts to the Foundation are an investment in the future of the community.

John Tyler Community College is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler offers affordable, quality programs for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, train for the workforce, or switch careers. The College, which served nearly 13,800 students during the 2014-15 academic year, offers 20 associate degrees, six certificates, and 38 career studies certificates. The institution also serves more than 13,000 non-credit trainees and over 1,000 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance.
