CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Gender and Autism. The Problem of Childhood Homelessness. Funeral Practices Throughout History. The Impact of Gender on Gifted Education. These are just a few of the topics that will presented by John Tyler Community College students during the College’s Social Sciences Research Expo on May 1, 2014. During the event, students will display, discuss and exchange ideas about the research they’ve conducted for a variety of classes. “John Tyler Community College is on a mission to provide quality educational opportunities that inspire student success,” says Michael Rutz, instructor of sociology at John Tyler and the organizer of the event. “The Social Sciences Research Expo offers an opportunity to our students that would typically be found at a four-year university – the opportunity to be honored and rewarded for exceptional work, outside of the classroom. I have personally graded many research papers that deserved not only an ‘A,’ but appreciation from others within our academic community. Participation at the Expo will foster a sense of pride and achievement in students' academic performance and earn them an additional accomplishment for their resumes or college applications.”
The community is invited to come to the Midlothian Campus, Hamel Hall, room H109, on May 1 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. to meet the students, review the research, ask questions, and join the discussion. Attendees will be given the opportunity to vote on their favorite project, and prizes will be awarded for first place, runner up and “fan favorite.” Light refreshments will also be served.
